1. Invasive evaluation of the coronary arteries by means of angiography provides only anatomical information. This should be complemented by further physiological testing. 2. A multitude of catheter-based methods that quantitatively assess coronary physiology have been proposed. Their validation and incorporation in clinical practice differs considerably. 3. Different modalities for the physiological assessment of the coronaries provide information on the macrocirculation, microcirculation, or both.
