When analyzing the spatial evolution characteristics of urban and rural settlements with traditional methods, there is a problem of incomplete characteristic analysis results. For this reason, a GIS analysis method of spatial evolution characteristics of urban and rural settlements in Inner Mongolia is proposed. Using GIS spatial analysis and nuclear density estimation methods to analyze the evolution characteristics of Kangbashi New Area, the results are as follows: From 2006 to 2015, the number of settlement patches in the Kangbashi New Area continued to increase, with significant spatial expansion characteristics, and the settlement patches showed obvious spatial agglomeration characteristics towards the water. Zalut Banner is a semi-agricultural and semi-pastoral area where Mongolians and Han people live together, and most of them are Mongolian; the rural settlements are mostly agricultural villages, which are large and dense, with the majority of Han residents.
