Nowadays, the porous medium engine as a new combustion concept is proposed to achieve high combustion efficiency and low emissions because of providing homogeneous combustion conditions. Rare experimental results have been reported about the effect of using porous media on the performance and exhaust emissions of internal combustion engines, in the previous researches. Therefore, in this paper the effect of using porous Otto and diesel engines on pollution emission, brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and brake torque brake power is investigated. The results show a 70% reduction in CO and HC emission, 27% decrease in fuel consumption and negligible increase in NO x emission due to using porous media in the air manifold of Otto engine, while using porous media in combustion chamber of diesel engine reduces NO x emission by 35% and increases HC emissions by 35%. According to the results, the best place for use of porous media in internal combustion engines with the largest advantages is in the air manifold of Otto engine.
