The power sector in Africa is significantly underdeveloped with paradoxically huge potential for renewable energy deployment. This case discusses how Akon Lighting Africa (hereafter ALA), a celebrity-run project, is harnessing solar energy to provide electricity to those who live without it. To become successful, the initiative uses a simple but an effective strategy; it combines the continent’s natural sunshine with innovative technologies and African expertise. The case starts with a portrayal of the energy situation in Africa and goes on to discuss the vision of the project, their activities till date, competitors, the social impact and the overwhelming responses from beneficiaries. In addition to examining the challenges of operating in different countries, the case looks through the 4A lens to show how the initiative can exploit its competitive advantages to boost electricity accessibility in Africa.
