Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a disease characterized by fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. In this article, we review some of the current therapeutic approaches used in the treatment of the fibrotic manifestations of SSc. Methotrexate, mycophenolate, and cyclophosphamide are relatively inexpensive and traditional options. Biologic agents, such as rituximab, tocilizumab, and abatacept, have been evaluated with variable results. The role of novel agents such as nintedanib and pirfenidone is currently being considered, In recent years, a more robust evidence base for the use of a variety of immunosuppressive agents has been published offering a wider array of therapeutic options for the fibrotic manifestations of SSc.
