Immunotherapy represents a breakthrough in cancer treatment in the past decade. It is a powerful treatment modality that can help transform cancer into a manageable disease by enabling the immune system to eliminate tumor cells. Advances in the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors, adoptive cell therapy, and oncolytic viruses have led to exceptional and durable clinical responses in patients with late-stage disease. Here we discuss some approved or under investigation immunotherapeutics that either directly involve T-cells such as chimeric antigen receptor T-cells and checkpoint inhibitors or lead to the activation of T-cells such as oncolytic viruses.
