Highlights • Binge-watching frequency and motives explain problematic viewing behaviors.• However, binge-watching is not a problematic behavior per se.• Frequently bingeing can promote problematic viewing habits.• Recreational motifs for binge-watching attenuate indicators for problematic viewing.• While social interaction, learning, escapism, loneliness, and stimulation promote them. We hope this is possible.• The latter interact with the frequency of use in nurturing the development of problematic habits.
