Abstract In this paper, a gaseous hydrocarbon mixture (hydrogen-ethylene-acetylene) fuel was used to investigate the initiation process, the stabilization process, and the quenching process of the rotating detonation wave. The results show that the experiments could successfully achieve stable rotating detonation waves under the four working conditions. During the stabilization process, the air-injection slot affects the stability of the rotating detonation wave, and the intensity of the detonation wave is mainly affected by the mass flow rate. The gaseous mixture fuel is suitable for generating relatively stable rotating detonation waves with the condition of stoichiometric ratio. In the initiation process or the quenching process, it is feasible to distinguish the detonation mode and the deflagration mode via the shock-wave pressure gradient.
