Study summary. The researchers conducted an observational study to assess the nasolabial appearance of patients with CLP. They used the photographic records of 429 patients* who underwent CLP surgery at a specialized center since the 1950s and asked a panel of raters to assess the nose, profile, lip, and vermillion using a 5-point Likert scale. The average esthetic scores improved over time, from approximately 3.0 points in the 1950s to approximately 2.4 points in the 1990s. Patients with unilateral CLP had better scores in the 1950s by an average of approximately 0.3 points, but in the 1980s the scores were similar between patients with unilateral and bilateral CLP. Experienced male raters assigned worse scores, on average, by approximately 0.5 and 0.2 points in unilateral and bilateral CLP, respectively, than male layperson
