HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and other blood-borne pathogens present emergency health care personnel with the 2-fold challenge of ensuring that all emergency department (ED) patients have adequate access to care and treatment irrespective of their infectious disease status, and preventing transmission of blood-borne pathogens to health care personnel and other ED patients. The American College of Emergency Physicians endorses the following principles and recommendations relating to the care of patients seeking emergency care and ED health care personnel who provide clinical care:
