s Appetite xxx (xxxx) foods that address micronutrient requirements. For ethical and practical reasons, the work has never been repeated. In response to these challenges, we developed an alternative approach that derives evidence from patterns of choices across a range of foods. In a series of trials (N1⁄4 210) adults selected one of two pairs of fruits and vegetables. In two studies, (Study 1, N1⁄4 45; Study 2, N1⁄4 83), we found that micronutrients do indeed exert an influence e humans not only show a tendency to pick pairs of foods that maximise total amounts, but their selection strategy broadens the range of micronutrients that are available. In a separate analysis, a similar patternwas observed in data drawn from the UK National Nutrition Diet Survey (analysis of 1086 records). Together, this work demonstrates how long-sought-after evidence for nutritional wisdom might be exposed and it challenges widely held beliefs about how humans maintain a balanced diet.
