Abstract This paper provides a description of a freeware tool for Process Integration (PI) - FI2EPI that can be used in academia and industry. Using Pinch Analysis, it can handle several energy management scenarios as well as saving great amount of time in routine tedious calculations, well known to everyone working in PI projects. Integration between a process and the utility system is one of the main features which FI2EPI is able to provide to its users. On the lookout for energy efficiency, FI2EPI is capable of playing an important role in one’s calculations, as it enables instantaneous processing of the inputs, by automatically framing composite curves, building heat cascades, constructing Heat Exchanger Network (HEN), performing heat shifting, amongst other features. An example project is presented with the purpose of showing not only how FI2EPI works, but also to discuss scenarios that based on economic and technical criteria will lead to the best integration option.
