Abstract A novel catalyst material consisting of Pt0 and Ce1-xPtxO1-δ particles supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified with cerium (MWC1-xCexNTs) has been prepared by liquid phase deposition and vapor-phase dissociative methods. Despite low total Pt loading of 6 wt%, Ce1-xPtxO2-δ + Pt0/MWC1-xCexNTs catalyst exhibits outstanding activity for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and remarkable CO removing ability in acidic media. Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry study demonstrated that CO2 and HCO2CH3 are the oxidation products on Ce1-xPtxO2-δ + Pt0/MWC1-xCexNTs. The Ce1-xPtxO2-δ solid solution particles facilitate the adsorption of hydroxyl species due to the considerable presence of oxygen vacancies. Adsorbed hydroxyl species interact with Pt0-CO blocked sites releasing Pt0 to proceed with MOR. The presence of cerium in MWC1-xCexNTs support presumably facilitates the transport of electrons providing favorable conditions to enhance MOR.
