•The importance of accurate estimates of IAA requirements for aquaculture species has become increasingly important due to replacing fishmeal with alternative protein feedstuffs.•Tryptophan is the third most limiting amino acid in plant protein feedstuffs used in aquaculture diets.•The minimum dietary tryptophan requirement of red drum was determined to be 0.28±0.05% of dry diet (0.80% of dietary protein).
