Abstract The objective of this paper is to study the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of the UNESCO aridity index (AI) at annual and seasonal temporal scales in northwestern China during the 55-year study period (1961–2015). Based on climate data from 178 meteorological stations provided by the China Meteorological Data Service Center, AI trends were investigated by the Mann-Kendall test. The results showed that the annual and seasonal AIs displayed a mixed pattern of positive and negative trends for the period of 1961–2015 across the study area.
