Abstract Deep eutectic solvents (DES) can be a promising medium for lignocellulose biomass processing. The present paper investigates suitable operating conditions for the DES pretreatment on coffee silverskin (CS), a waste stream from the coffee industry. Choline chloride/glycerol was used as a low-cost DES, and the solid to solvent ratio and temperature were varied during processing. An optimal set of operating conditions (150 °C 1/16 biomass to solvent ratio) was proposed resulting in high glucose yields and low by-product formation. Moreover, the pretreated biomass was analyzed with XRD and SEM in order to disclose how DES pretreatment acts on the biomass structure.
