Highlights • Osteoporosis is a disease that impacts over 200 million people worldwide.• The probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) has been shown to prevent bone loss during estrogen deficiency.• Lactobacillic acid is important for L. reuteri-induced suppression of in vitro osteoclastogenesis.• Osteoclastogenesis was inhibited by L. reuteri and lactobacillic acid via GPR120 signaling.
