Recombinant production of membrane proteins in high yield is the first requirement to initiate attempts to determine their high resolution structure. We have developed a Saccharomyces cerevisiae based platform for high yield production of functional membrane proteins of mainly human origin. We have presently produced and purified around 50 human membrane proteins from this platform. The recombinant proteins include humane aquaporins, K-channels, Cl-channels, GPCRs, P-type ATPases and glucose transporters.
