The study of ion channels has been traditionally based on expression in mammalian cell lines or Xenopus laevis oocytes and their functions have been investigated by various electrophysiological techniques. Recently the structures of several ion channels have been determined and this has increased the understanding of ion channel function. Potassium channels are the largest and most diverse group of ion channels; yet the number of high resolution structures of K+ channels is limited, due to difficulties in their recombinant overexpression and purification.
