Highlights • We have synthesized a wide range of tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium arylchalcogenylacetates, “protatranes”.• “Protatranes” are growth stimulators of hydrocarbon-oxidizing Rhodococcus erythropolis bacteria isolated from Lake Baikal.• The effect of “protatranes” on growth of Pseudomonas fluorescens is less obvious.• The effect of stimulants on Rhodococcus erythropolis is likely due to the structure of protatranes and the cell wall of bacteria.
