Highlights • E. fetida microbiota is affected by pH and carbon content of rearing substrates.• This is the first report of the microbiota of E. fetida fed with brewers’ spent grains.• Brewers’ spent grains induced proliferation of bacterial taxa involved in cellulose degradation and nitrogen cycle.• Ammonia and nitrates were assimilated at high rates by the microbiota of E. fetida fed with brewers’ spent grains.
