Highlights • High-sensitivity troponin T is associated with 12-year risk of HF in older men.• The association is consistent across population strata.• The 12-year risk of HF is very low in older men with undetectable troponin T.• Myocardial damage is therefore an important antecedent of HF.• In a model including NT-proBNP, troponin T did not improve prediction of HF.
