The recently concluded prospective OCSTM Heart EXPAND Trial demonstrated that the use of ex-vivo perfusion for expanded criteria (ECD) hearts may be a viable method for increasing donor heart utilization. We sought to estimate the potential impact of ex-vivo ECD heart perfusion on the US donor pool using a large national transplant registry. After applying the inclusion criteria from EXPAND, 8,637 potentially eligible donors were identified in the US from January 1, 2015 to June 30, 2019, representing a substantial potential increase in the donor pool.
