Abstract The surface Ti 3 + and P 5 + co-doped {001} and {101} faceted TiO 2 nanocrystal was successfully prepared by a shape-control regent-free method. The as-synthesized TiO 2 nanocrystal showed amazing visible-light absorption and ultra-high visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity (724 μmol g − 1  h − 1 ), which was 24 times than that of P25 TiO 2 catalyst, and the visible light photocatalytic mechanism for hydrogen production was proposed.
