Abstract CaBaFx composites were prepared by a solid-state grinding method with various molar ratios of Ca and Ba and evaluated as catalysts for the pyrolysis of 1-chloro-1,1-difluoroethane (HCFC-142b, CH3CClF2) to vinylidene fluoride (VDF, CH2=CF2). The results indicated that CaBaFx composites are stable at 350 °C, with high conversion of HCFC-142b and VDF selectivity compared to single component catalysts. It was found that the surface acidity of CaBaFx plays a major role in their catalytic performance. The industrial manufacture of VDF is conducted at 650–700 °C, whereas the CaBaFx catalysts provide a promising pathway to produce VDF at much lower temperatures (below 350 °C).
