Abstract The promotional effect of Ce and Fe modified Cu-based extruded catalysts on their performance for the catalytic elimination of co-fed acrylonitrile and HCN was investigated. The CuCeFe-ZTA catalyst exhibited great catalytic performance and stability. The introduction of Ce led to an increase in the amount of active oxygen species and better reducibility of the catalyst, while more strong acid sites were formed upon further modification of the catalyst upon addition of Fe. These features are critical in promoting catalyst performance for nitrile and HCN oxidation reactions, and the results of this work may facilitate the research in developing industrial catalysts for the purification of nitrile and HCN-containing exhaust gas streams.
