Abstract A highly dispersed Ru W bifunctional catalyst was easily fabricated on silica support through surface modification by polyethylene glycol (PEG) and a subsequent impregnation. It was found that the obtained 1Ru10W-PEG catalyst exhibited much higher catalytic activity and lower diols (ethylene glycol (EG), 1,2-propylene glycol (PG), and butanediol (BDO)) yields than the conventional 1Ru10W catalyst tested in a flow fixed-bed reactor. For the same W density on support surface, the smaller WOx crystal size can provide more acid sites and Ru-WOx interface sites for the selective cleavage of the C C bonds in glucose and the subsequent hydrogenation to form lower diols.
