Abstract This study reports a new multiphase apparatus, the external-loop airlift reactor (EL-ALR), with the RMF generators in the riser and downcomer columns, which shows the enhancement of hydrodynamic parameters (downcomer liquid velocity; mean liquid circulation velocity; mean circulation time and mixing time) in comparison to ALR without the application of magnetic field (MF). The results show that the usage of RMF generators leads to the improvement of the downcomer liquid velocity and mean liquid circulation velocity. It is also presented that the mean circulation time and mixing time under the RMF action have significantly lower values of these parameters in comparison with convectional ALR. The present study provides the comprehensive assessment of applying the RMF for improving the performance of EL-ALR.
