Abstract The effects of Er 3+ ion doping on the lattice structure, magnetism, and ferroelectric properties of SmFeO 3 were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetic characterization, and ferroelectricity characterization. The results show that the lattice constant was reduced and the distortion became more significant after doping. Both the magnetic susceptibility and saturation magnetization were significantly enhanced, and the system was transformed from hard magnetic system to soft magnetic system. The electric polarization was also decreased with the doping.
