Abstract SiC honeycomb ceramics were fabricated through the incorporation of Al 4 SiC 4 additive at 2200 °C. Comparison of phase constitution, microstructural evolution, pore size distribution and mechanical properties of recrystallized SiC honeycomb ceramics with different amount of Al 4 SiC 4 additive were investigated. Al 4 SiC 4 was found to promote the recrystallization of submicron 3C-SiC and crystal transition of large particles 3C-SiC. By adjusting the amount of Al 4 SiC 4 additive, the pore structures in the channel walls could be controlled. The mechanical properties of the recrystallized SiC honeycomb ceramics were enhanced due to the reinforcement of neck formation, the evolution in the microstructure and the improvement in bulk density through the incorporation of 4 wt% Al 4 SiC 4 additive.
