Abstract This communication reports the facile preparation of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) from urea via pyrolysis approach. Microstructure and morphology of the prepared g-C 3 N 4 were studied by analytical techniques such as X-ray diffractometry and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), respectively. Simultaneous thermo-gravimetric and differential thermal analysis confirms the thermal stability of the g-C 3 N 4 over a wide range of temperatures. Room temperature fluorescence spectroscopic investigation substantiates the existence of three emission centers in the g-C 3 N 4. The nanosecond level time resolved fluorescence study divulges the longevity of photogenerated charge carriers. The calculated intensity average lifetime value of the synthesized g-C 3 N 4 is 9.42 ns Steady state and time resolved fluorescence spectroscopic analyzes corroborate the potential applications of graphitic-C 3 N 4 in optoelectronic devices.
