Abstract Ca3Ln3Ce7Ta2O26.5 (Ln = Gd or Yb) oxides were synthesised using a high-temperature sintering technology at 1873 K for 10 h in air. The crystal lattice structures and thermophysical properties of these two oxides were estimated. The fabricated ceramics present an onefold pyrochlore-kind lattice. Because of the relatively higher atomic weight of Ca3Yb3Ce7Ta2O26.5 than that of Ca3Gd3Ce7Ta2O26.5, the heat-insulation ability of Ca3Yb3Ce7Ta2O26.5 is less than that of Ca3Gd3Ce7Ta2O26.5. Due to the minor electro-negativity of Yb than that of Gd, Ca3Yb3Ce7Ta2O26.5 exhibits greater thermal expansion coefficient than Ca3Gd3Ce7Ta2O26.5.
