Abstract Bright red emission of Mn4+ ions was obtained in a novel non-rare-earth host of Li4AlSbO6. Luminescence properties as well as crystal structure and particle morphology of Li4AlSbO6:Mn4+ phosphors were studied. The phosphors can effectively produce intensive red emission at 673 nm with the excitation of UV or blue light. The optimum doping concentration of Mn4+ is obtained at 0.15 mol%. The internal quantum efficiency measurement shows that Li4AlSbO6:Mn4+ is an efficient phosphor with the best quantum yield of 54.8%. The electroluminescence of phosphor-converted LED device based on Li4AlSbO6:Mn4+ is well coupled with the absorption of several important plant pigments, which suggests that the phosphor is a promising candidate for indoor plant lighting.
