Synthesis of sequence-defined oligourethanes (i.e., writing) followed by chemical self-immolation can yield mass fragments detectable by standard liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS) instruments (i.e., reading). Expanding beyond the traditional binary approach of chemically distinct monomers as 1s and 0s, in a recent issue of Cell Reports Physical Science, Anslyn and co-workers introduce hexadecimal encoding and multifunctional oligourethanes.
