Abstract In this paper, the effect of microscale structures on the tribological and cutting behavior of cutting tools has been evaluated. A method for developing the micro structure design is presented using a statistic screening design. The micro structures are applied using ultrashort-pulsed laser technology. The effects of different structural parameters are investigated in orthogonal cutting of AW7075. Tools with structures benefit from lower cutting forces and exhibit a shorter chip morphology.
