Abstract The paper aims to provide a comprehensive review on the achievements made on moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method and the applications in nuclear engineering. The state-of-the-art advancements in stability and accuracy, boundary conditions, surface tension, multiphase flow, fluid–structure interaction and multi-resolution technique are discussed. The applications in nuclear reactor fundamental thermal hydraulics and melt behaviors in severe accident are summarized. The drawbacks, current challenges, future developments and potential application areas of MPS method are highlighted.
