Abstract Agglomeration of electrosteric stabilized submicron particles induced by grinding media wear was observed during stirred media milling of organic substances. A mechanism of selective heteroagglomeration due to opposite surface charges of wear and product particles was identified. Theoretical evidence is given by calculation of particle–particle interaction forces. The findings reveal that interactions between grinding media wear and product particles have a significant contribution to the colloidal stability of product suspensions. As a conclusion, formulation principles for electrosteric stabilized nanosuspensions and guidelines for the choice of the grinding media material can be derived.
