Abstract In this paper, an environmentally friendly ionic sugar based surfactant was synthesized and its efficiency as a retarding agent in dyeing of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers was investigated. A new molecular design method based on the partition coefficient and parachor parameters, has been put in to practice to achieve this goal. The performance of the designed and synthesized retarder was evaluated by measuring the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of PAN dyeing using two cationic dyes namely C.I Basic Blue 9 (methylene blue) and C.I Basic Green 4 (malachite green) in comparison with a commercial retarder. Also reflectance properties of dyed acrylic fabrics in presence and absence of synthesized and commercial retarders were determined. The results confirm the reliability of the design method applied to synthesis an environmentally friendly and efficient retarder.
