Abstract Herein, a photo-responsive mono-component self-assembly system based on host-guest inclusion complexation is presented. An azobenzene group was linked to a β-cyclodextrin by an alkyl chain, generating a novel amphiphile βCD-C6-Azo. The prepared βCD-C6-Azo molecules showed reversible aggregate behavior due to photo-isomerization of azobenzene. In the case of trans-form βCD-C6-Azo system, intermolecular host-guest complexes between β-CD and azobenzene were formed, which were verified by 2D 1H NMR analysis, and further self-assembled into curved linear structures in water driven mainly by hydrogen bonding. Dissociation of cis-azobenzene group from β-CD cavity was achieved upon irradiated by UV light, leading to the aggregate transformation into vesicles.
