Abstract Acrylic coatings composed of modified MoS2 nanosheets (MMN) were successfully prepared on the surface of galvanized sheets. Bulk MoS2 was successfully exfoliated and modified using the ultrasonic method. Then, the effects of MMN on the morphology, composition, and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings were analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that MMN reduced the number of cracks in the coatings and made the coatings more compact. Furthermore, the coating corrosion resistance was significantly enhanced. Polarization curves showed that the corrosion current density was reduced by nearly two orders of magnitude by preparing the coating with 0.2 g/L of MMN (sample CM-0.2). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results also demonstrated that the barrier performance was stronger for the MMN composite coating.
