Abstract A J2-deformation type model coupled with dilatancy is proposed, aiming to eliminate two major deficiencies of Duncan–Chang model in modeling shear responses, i.e. no softening response and no volumetric response. Only four model constants are traditional parameters and can easily be determined in the basic model. The basic model can be extended by incorporating a more appropriate dilatancy expression and modifying the shear response curve to simulate a more realistic behavior of soils. The simulative capacity of the model is demonstrated by the comparisons between the model responses and the test data of both sand and clay.
