Abstract This study presents a novel method for estimating the initial excess pore water pressure (EPWP) over depth during pile jacking into saturated fine-grained soil. Three-dimensional (3D) numerical models considering the pore water effect are presented to simulate the pile installation. Seven coefficients are defined to describe the variation of the EPWP with depth. Numerical studies are conducted to investigate the effects of soil and construction parameters on the normalized variables relevant to the coefficients of the EPWP distribution curve. Subsequently, a formula is proposed to describe the vertical distribution of EPWP at different pile jacking depths. The proposed method is then validated against field data.
