Abstract The utilization of large amounts of bark coming from the timber harvesting poorly implemented, most common solution for it is the energy production, namely burning. In this research had been developed new uses, resulting in higher value-added utilization. As natural bark protects the live parts of trees in the case of small forest fires, it is also possible to apply it as thermal insulation material. During the examinations various bark panels were made from black locust shredded bark. It was found that the thermal conductivity of the panels is around 0.06 W/mK, which is similar to the value of natural insulation materials. Furthermore, it was found that the formaldehyde emissions of finished boards are much lower than that of other wood-based panels. According to investigations the thickness of panels had no significant effect on heat transfer in a range of 20–40 mm and the thermal conductivity of the boards made of various bark fractions were similar.
