Abstract In order to study the mechanical-electric response characteristics of 1-3 cement based piezoelectric composite under impact loading where PZT-5H is used as the piezoelectric material, both single impact compression test and repeated impact compression test were performed by using the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar measurement device. The obtained experimental results showed that the 1-3 cement based piezoelectric composite is the strain-rate sensitive material. There is a threshold value for the mechanical-electric response of the material. When the impact-induced compressive stress is not higher than 70 MPa, the sample has a good linearity and numerical sensitivity 318pC/N in the single impact compression test. In the repeated impact compression test, when the impact compressive stress is not higher than 70 MPa, the output electrical displacement of the sample does not change significantly with the increased impact number and the sample seems to have good repeatability. When the impact compressive stress is greater than 70 MPa, however, the output electrical displacement of the sample gradually decreases with the increased impact number.
