Abstract Obtaining geometric information of rock aggregates is a requisite process for numerical simulation and experimental investigation of their macroscopic and microscopic properties. In this study, a systematic framework is first established to create a digitalized 2D particle database for the shape evaluation and discrete modeling of rock aggregates. Then, the shape indexes of 2D rock aggregates are computed and statistically analyzed. Subsequently, a series of computational geometry algorithms are employed to generate numerical samples. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to quantitatively investigate the effects of the aspect ratio on the macro- and micro-mechanical properties of 2D rock aggregates based on PFC2D.
