Abstract This research focuses on the development of lightweight cementitious composite (LCC) with targeted densities, 800 kg/m3 and 1000 kg/m3 by incorporating perlite microspheres. The mechanical properties and the drying shrinkage of the LCC with 0.15%, 0.30% and 0.50% of polypropylene fibers were evaluated. It was found out that compressive strength achieved by LCC is in the range of 10.4–23.2 MPa and the specific strength achieved is up to 23.70 kPa/kgm−3 which is superior than most of lightweight concretes with similar density. Although the effect of polypropylene (PP) fibers on the compressive strength was minimal, the inclusion of low PP fibers dosage could improve the flexural strength of LCC up to 26.7%. The inclusion of PP fibers also showed positive effect in reducing the drying shrinkage strain of LCC. In overall, LCC with good mechanical properties and acceptable shrinkage was successfully developed.
