Recent advances in synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, and bioprocess engineering have renewed our capacity to solve the World’s energy needs using biology. While this is indeed not a new quest for biotechnology, newfound tools and capacities are improving the prospects of success. In this light, this special issue is dedicated to the recent advances in energy biotechnology with a focus on microbial engineering, bioprocess engineering, gas-to-fuels conversion, and photosynthetic hosts.
