Abstract This work presents the first study on 2-mercaprobenzoxazole (MBOH) as a corrosion inhibitor for brass in chloride solution. The corrosion inhibition effect was conclusively demonstrated. A detailed surface analysis using gas cluster ion beam (GCIB) and monoatomic Ar+ sputter beams in combination with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements was performed. Furthermore, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) tandem MS (MS/MS) was used for large-area imaging, to proof the MBOH-specific peak, and to show the 3D distribution of MBOH, Cu, Zn, and Cl– species at the organics/brass interface by GCIB and C60+ sputtering in combination with ToF-SIMS analysis.
