Abstract The present work is about the growth of spheroidal structure in graphite disc via thermal arc plasma treatment route. Arc plasma treatment of graphite discs was carried out between 5 and 10 min. Graphite with spheroidal structure was found to show unique physical properties like high specific surface and high microhardness. The properties of samples were characterized with XRD, XPS, micro Raman, FTIR, FESEM, TEM, EDS, microhardness and BET surface area study. The typical 10 min arc plasma treated graphite sample shows high values of BET surface area and microhardness of 1430 m2 g−1 and 620 VHN respectively than the untreated one.
