Abstract We investigate the electronic and optical properties of a confined exciton in CdS/CdSe/CdS asymmetric quantum well taking into account the geometrical confinement in which the right well size for various values of barrier sizes is varied. The variation of energy difference between the subbands with the change in well width alters the degree of quantum confinement. It behaves as single quantum well as the barrier width becomes very thin. The absorption coefficient brings out the fact that the optical susceptibilities demonstrate a stronger dependence on the spatial confinement. The narrow barrier plays a major role in determining the opto-electronic properties.
